Essence Birdsall,
Admissions Coach, Trellis

Essence Birdsall serves as the Admissions Coach for the Trellis Hybrid College Program. Throughout her career, she has made a commitment to fight social injustice and work towards true equity for underserved populations. Essence earned her B.A. from Northwestern University in sociology, with a concentration in social inequality, and English literature. During college, Essence helped with a food waste prevention initiative, securing and distributing large amounts of unused goods to local shelters and individuals in need. After graduation, she directed an educational outreach program, working in three Louisiana correctional institutions to connect incarcerated individuals with higher education opportunities. Prior to joining the Cowen Institute, Essence facilitated wraparound teams of community resources that supported youth with behavioral health issues at risk of out-of-home placement. Overall, she is committed to utilizing her skills and knowledge to provide aid to others. With Trellis, Essence is excited to advocate for the success of each student.
